Putting the Teaching Material and the AI Teacher in the Same Space

What “AI Learning Studio by Threedive AI” Is Trying to Do

Educational material on the web has often kept two things separate: “the thing you look at” and “the thing that explains it.” A video or a PDF becomes the material, and a learner with a question has to go find a separate contact form or chatbot. Reading a piece of material while talking about it, in the same place, has not been the norm.

“AI Learning Studio by Threedive AI” is a platform for creating learning materials, built on a simple design idea: place 3D learning material and an AI avatar in the same space. It is aimed at schools and educational institutions, cram schools, and publishers of educational materials, and was released by METABIRDS Co., Ltd..

Why Interactive Learning Material Is Needed Now

Japan’s education sector is facing two structural shifts.

The first is a shortage of teachers. According to Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) survey on “teacher shortages” for fiscal year 2025, published in March 2026, 3,827 teachers were short nationwide at public schools as of May 1 — nearly double the figure from the same point in the fiscal 2021 survey (2,065). As the workload carried by each teacher increases, the time available for answering individual questions or preparing supplementary material shrinks.

The second is the shrinking population of 18-year-olds. Japan’s 18-year-old population fell from roughly 2.49 million in 1966 to roughly 1.12 million in 2022, and is projected to fall below 1 million by 2035. Universities and other institutions are in the middle of intense competition to attract students, and open campus events and facility tours are no longer just an annual routine — they have become an important touchpoint that helps prospective students decide where to apply. Reaching applicants who live far away, or who cannot attend in person due to scheduling conflicts, is a shared challenge across many institutions.

Against this backdrop, there is growing need for a way to handle both “preparing material” and “answering each learner’s individual questions” without adding to an already heavy workload.

Putting Material and an AI Avatar in One Space

The design of “AI Learning Studio” comes down to one idea: don’t separate the material from the person explaining it.

Users start by creating a “material space.” Spaces can be created separately for each lesson unit, or for purposes such as open campus events and facility tours. Inside that space, “material objects” can include uploaded 3D models, 3D models generated automatically by AI, simple shapes created directly in the tool, and images, video, or YouTube video. Existing material can be reused as-is, and new 3D models can be prepared for subjects where a three-dimensional view is helpful.

The “AI avatar” placed in that space supports voice conversation in multiple languages, and its conversation prompts can be set to match the situation. It can also be given PDFs and other material to learn from, so its responses stay aligned with the lesson content. For language learning, it can serve as a conversation partner for pronunciation and expression practice; for facility tours, it can act as a guide answering visitors’ questions.

By putting the material and the person who explains it in the same space, learners no longer need to move back and forth between “reading” and “asking.” That is the idea at the center of this platform.

Why This Is Possible Now

The idea of “putting material and an AI avatar in the same space” is not new by itself. What made it practical to offer is that several generative AI technologies have each reached a usable stage, and can now be combined.

The first is the conversation layer. Conversations with the AI avatar work through both text and voice. As speech recognition and speech synthesis have improved in accuracy, learners who are less comfortable typing, or who want to keep their hands free, can now simply talk to get a response. Conversations support multiple languages, which is useful for learners who are not native Japanese speakers, or for guiding international students (Threedive AI has stated elsewhere that it supports over 100 languages).

The second is the layer that generates the space itself. “AI Learning Studio” connects to “Marble,” a spatial-generation AI developed by US-based World Labs. Marble is what’s known as a “world model” — it generates a consistent 3D space from photos or simple instructions, using a technique called Gaussian Splatting. This means material creators don’t have to design a 3D space from scratch; they can build a space based on a real location or reference photos.

The third is the layer that generates individual 3D objects. “AI Learning Studio” also connects to “Meshy,” a 3D generative AI tool. Meshy can generate 3D models from text or images, making it possible to prepare a usable 3D object for a lesson in a short amount of time, without dedicated 3D modeling software.

The fourth is the layer that turns reference material into knowledge. Uploading PDFs and other material lets the AI avatar answer based on that material’s content, using an approach called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Existing textbooks or manuals can be used directly as “knowledge the AI can draw on.”

Each of these four layers is useful as a standalone technology. But if conversation, space generation, object generation, and reference-material use remain separate tools, even making one piece of material means moving between multiple services and re-entering data each time. What “AI Learning Studio” offers as a single platform is these technologies brought together into one workflow, organized around the goal of building learning material. It’s the accumulation of progress across each of these individual layers of generative AI that has brought “putting material and an AI teacher in the same space” within reach of users without specialized technical skills.

Lowering the Bar to Publishing

No matter how much care goes into building a piece of material, it doesn’t matter if it never reaches learners. Material created in “AI Learning Studio” can be published three ways: sharing the issued URL directly, embedding a tag into an existing web page, or displaying it as a pop-up from a button or banner on a site. None of these methods requires the learner to log in or register an account.

The pricing follows the same logic. Building material and talking with the AI avatar can be tried for free, and moving to a paid plan — starting at ¥5,000 per month (excluding tax) — is only needed if publishing needs to continue past one hour.

Built for Schools, Publishers, and Cram Schools Alike

The intended users are not limited to school corporations. The platform is also intended for use in digital material from educational publishers and original courses from cram schools, and supports LMS and integrated LMS/MOOC development, integration with existing educational systems, screen customization to match different onboarding flows, and OEM provision. The aim is to let each organization build a learning experience that fits its own brand.

One example of its use is AI-powered conversational learning material designed to train multilingual communication in specific real-world settings, such as shopping at a convenience store. These materials are being used at educational institutions, including Osaka University.

In Summary

“AI Learning Studio” is less a tool for making material-creation more efficient, and more the product of a single design decision: put the material and the person explaining it in the same place. AI is not, of course, meant to replace teachers or staff in every situation. Deciding what goes into a space, and how the AI should explain it, remains up to the teacher or material creator, just as it always has.

Amid the structural changes Japan’s education sector will keep facing — a shortage of teachers and a shrinking 18-year-old population — how much a tool like this can actually help teachers reach each learner with limited staff time is a question we intend to keep testing, through how it gets used in the field by schools, publishers, and cram schools.

Building and trying out material and an AI avatar is free to start.
