Closing the gap called “you have to be there”
What the automation of 3D model creation actually means
There is a great deal you cannot understand without going to see it. The equipment on a factory floor. How big an apartment really is. The feel of a tourist site. How the counters are laid out at city hall. Go there and you will know. The problem is that some people cannot go. Too far, no time, a body that will not cooperate, a language they do not speak. The reasons vary; the outcome does not. That person does not get the information.
How to close this gap has been understood for years: reproduce the place in 3D and put a guide inside it. The reason it did not happen is that preparing the 3D was heavy going. The 3D model generation feature added to Threedive AI in v1.21.0 on August 19, 2026 sits on the side of that weight that is now giving way.
What follows is in three parts: why this is urgent now, why it could not be solved before, and what has changed.
Why the urgency
“Please come and see for yourself” works only if there is someone to guide and someone able to travel. In Japan, both sides are thinning at once.
Take the explaining side. Teikoku Databank puts the share of companies reporting a shortage of full-time staff at 51.3% as of July 2026 — the fourth consecutive July above half. The figure is slightly improved year on year, and Teikoku Databank attributes that partly to productivity gains from digitalisation. Replacing human effort with systems has already started showing up in the numbers. But the replacement has not kept pace everywhere: bankruptcies attributed to labour shortages reached 227 in the first half of 2026, a record for a first half. Guiding, explaining, and attending in person tend to fall into the second category.
Now the travelling side. Japan’s Statistics Bureau estimates the population aged 65 and over at 36.19 million as of September 15, 2025 — 29.4% of the total, the highest on record, and the highest among the 38 countries with populations over 40 million.

That share passed 10% in 1985 and 20% in 2005, and the projection by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research cited in the same document puts it at 37.1% by 2050. Being older is not the same as finding travel difficult, though. The same release notes that the 65-and-over population fell by 50,000 from the previous year, and that roughly one in seven workers is now 65 or older, a record. A closer proxy for mobility burden would be the 21.24 million people aged 75 and over — 17.2% of the total. Still about one person in six.
Fewer people to explain, and this many people for whom travelling is itself a burden. The premise that on-site attendance is the only option is failing from both sides.
Why it could not be solved before
The answer was known and went unbuilt because 3D models were made to order. Without a specialist in-house, you described what you needed to a vendor, requested a quote, and waited. There are no public statistics on what 3D modelling costs, so leave the amount aside — the problem sits upstream of the amount. Running that process even once required a decision. “Let’s just make one and see” was not available.
The consequence is plain. Only organisations that could budget for it, and industries where 3D translates into revenue, got to show themselves in three dimensions. A large homebuilder could put show homes in VR; a local agency could not. So “you have to be there” persisted, and the cost fell on the people who could not.
What changed
3D generation stayed hard because there were not enough examples for an AI to learn from.
ShapeNetCore, released in 2015, held about 51,300 models across 55 categories. Objaverse 1.0 reached roughly 800,000 in December 2022, and Objaverse-XL passed 10 million deduplicated objects in 2023 — roughly 200-fold in eight years. (ShapeNetCore is a subset whose categories and orientations were verified by hand; what is compared here is data in a state where it can be trained on directly.)

The Objaverse-XL paper (NeurIPS 2023) reports that on novel view synthesis — inferring how an object looks from another angle given one image — performance kept improving as data scaled to 10 million, with few signs of slowing down. That was measured on that task specifically, but it marks an area where more examples still buy more capability. Methods advanced too, from DreamFusion (Poole et al., ICLR 2023) in 2022 through to Hunyuan3D 2.1 in June 2025, which Tencent positioned as ready for real work — the developer’s own characterisation, not an independent evaluation.
Threedive AI’s update history shows the change arriving in order.
- December 2025: support for 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), which reconstructs a real place in 3D from photos or video. Capture with a phone app and a shop or a landmark comes in as it is. No additional charge.
- April 17, 2026 (v1.14.0): “AI space generation (BETA)” — a 3D space built from text or an image without shooting anything. Roughly 4–5 minutes for fast draft generation, 7–10 for standard.
- August 19, 2026 (v1.21.0): 3D model generation — individual objects from text, one photo, or several.
The container was automated first. Places could be prepared, but the desks, machines, and products inside them still had to be made by hand. v1.21.0 fills that last hole.
How it is built
3D model generation is not a separate authoring tool; it sits in the media library, alongside images and video. Press the button, supply text or a picture. It finishes in minutes to tens of minutes, lands in the library automatically, and goes straight into a scene. A 3D model has dropped from the status of a finished work to that of raw material — obtained in the same place, with the same effort, as uploading a photo.
The current implementation uses World Labs’ Marble (via its API form, World API) to generate spaces and Meshy’s API to generate 3D models. What makes that workable is shared standards. GLB, the format the models come in, is the JPEG of 3D — standardised as ISO/IEC 12113:2022 in July 2022. On the space side, Threedive AI renders with Spark, the engine built by World Labs, supporting both the SOG and RAD formats. RAD is built for streaming, sending data progressively rather than all at once. A reconstructed space gets heavier the more faithful it is, so whether it can display without waiting for a complete download decides whether it is usable at all.
Because everything passes through standards, a faster, cheaper, or better generation service can simply be wired in. Something used as infrastructure for guidance not being chained to one vendor is less a feature than an operating requirement.
Separate technologies became one flow
What is happening is not that one excellent product arrived. It is that five technologies, developed separately, reached practical quality around the same time.

The fifth, operation by language, already has a field example. In August 2026 an engineer at Metabirds published a walkthrough combining Claude Desktop with the official MCP server available in Blender 5.1 and later: a textured, animated 3D model built without touching the Blender interface, exported as GLB, dropped into the Threedive AI media library, and published. The model came from an outside AI, not from any Threedive AI feature. It could still be received because GLB sat in between.
The rest is projection. 3D generation is currently an API call to an outside service, but there is a good chance it gets absorbed into the AI models themselves. Methods already exist that write Blender programs from a text description and assemble scenes of around a hundred 3D assets (SceneCraft, Hu et al., ICML 2024). If a model emits 3D data directly, generation fits inside a single conversational turn. Building on standards-based connections is also a way of preparing for that.
Whose “you have to be there” disappears
Seen from the side of society, who benefits?
People for whom travel is a burden. People whose health limits going out, people tied up with childcare or caregiving. Situations that ended with “come and see for yourself” become situations where the information arrives without the trip.
People who are far away. Another prefecture, another country. Combined with support for over a hundred languages, distance and language come off at once.
Small organisations doing the explaining. What changes is the order of magnitude of the budget. It does not go to zero: there is still a subscription, still credits consumed by generation, still the work of deciding what to place and how. But the decision moves from whether to commission a vendor to whether to try something within a monthly fee — and that alone changes how many organisations can take part.
Staff on the ground. Tours, viewings, counter explanations. Handing repeated explanation to something that runs around the clock frees people for work that requires judgment.
For the record, a 3D space is not a replacement for being there. Texture under the hand, smell, the exchange with a person on site — plenty does not transfer. A generated 3D model is also not dimensionally accurate data; it serves a different purpose than CAD or survey-based design data and is no basis for construction, manufacturing, or regulatory compliance. What it handles is 3D for explaining.
And 3D for explaining rarely paid for itself. One model to illustrate a point meant a quote, a lead time, and a decision about outsourcing. That imbalance is what disappears. It finishes in minutes, arrives in a standard format, and drops into the space as it is. Once those conditions hold, using 3D stops being a budget question and becomes a question of whether you have something to explain.
What separates one result from another is then not the quality of the model. It is what goes where in the space, in what order, and who explains what to whom. Closing the gap called “you have to be there” comes down, in the end, to that design.
The steps and output examples for 3D model generation are published in release notes v1.21.0.
